ABOUT THE BOOK

The 1881 census comprised two main parts. Part I covered preliminary operations, including the preparation of village lists, nomenclature of census areas and officers, and introductory remarks. Part II delved into detailed demographic data, including population density changes, gender proportions, religious affiliations, marital statuses, age distributions, caste information, languages spoken, birthplaces, occupations, education levels, and infirmities. Additionally, the census included data on towns and concluded with a comprehensive overview of the gathered information. This comprehensive census aimed to provide a thorough snapshot of the population, its demographics, and various socio-economic aspects in 1881.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rai Bahadur Pandit Bhag Ram was C.I.E. Revenue member of the Kashmir State council and Pandit Jai Lal, chief Judge Jammu of Khilat granted to them by the Maharaja of Kishemgurk. He was judicial member and secretary state council. He was deputed syperintendent of census oprations Kashmir State. He competed the census opration of 1891 successfully and submitted the compilation to the census authority of Indian.

J.A. Bourdillon (1811-1883) was a British civil servant in Madras. After serving various subordinate appointments in the provinces, he was appointed secretary to the board of revenue, and eventually in 1854 secretary to the government in the departments of revenue and public works in the Madras Presidency. Bourdillon was also the author of a treatise on the royatwar system.

Eustace J. Kitts, an Intelligent Officer of the British Raj, served as the Deputy Superintendent of Census Operations in Berar. He meticulously followed official circulars and instructions, successfully completing the census work. Kitts authored a renowned book based on the 1881 census reports, focusing on the castes and tribes of Colonial India. The book includes introductions, descriptions of various castes and tribes, and their sub-divisions. His work remains a valuable resource for understanding India's diverse cultural landscape during that period.

J.A. Baines (1847-1925) was an administrator in the Indian Civil Service during the period of the British Raj. In 1868, he passed the competitive examination for entry into the Indian Civil Service, spent two years in training and was then posed to the Bombay Presidency. In 1881, Baines was deputed superintendent of the census in the presidency and excelled to the degree that he was appointed census commissioner for the national census of 1891. He had worked as an assistant collector and magistrate of Poona from 1883 and sold various other posts while in India.

T.S. Weir was health officer and Acting municipal Commissioner under British Raj. The enumeration of the population of the British Empire resolved on early 1881. The discussion of the measures for the taking of the census of this imperial city became necessary in the later part of 1880. T.S. Weir got the opportunity to submit the report on the census of 1881. In the preparation of the statistical matter the line of the system of 1872 followed.

T. Drysdale was deputy superintendent of census, Central Provinces. The author compiled the complete account of the arrangement and instructions given. Regarding Feudatory States It was a bit difficult to manage according to the instruction given by the census authority of India. The states were under the management of British India.

Lewis McIver, a distinguished officer of the British Raj, held the titles of Barrister-at-Law and served in the Madras Civil Service. His notable achievements include overseeing the comprehensive castes census for Hindus and tribes for Muslims. He meticulously compiled an alphabetical list of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Cenara castes names, contributing significantly to the understanding of the region's diverse social fabric during his tenure.

Edmund White was an officer of British Raj. He was under Bengal civil service under the order of census commissioner of India. He completed Twenty-one census forms. The people of North Western Provinces and Oudh were enumerated on the 17th February, 1881 simultaneously with the people of the other provinces of the Indian Empire.

Denzil Charles Jelf Ibbetson (1847-1908) was an administrator in British India and an author. He served as chief commissioner of the central Provinces and Berar from 1898 to 1899 and lieutenant Governor of Punjab in 1907. He was ranked third in the competitive examination for the Indian Civil Services. He served temporarily as lieutenant Governor of Punjab in 1905 and took over the position permanently in March 107 when sir Charles Montgomery Rives retired.
